INSTRUMENT CLEANING

I am often asked about cleaning the insides of a piano. While we do provide that service to our customers, I have to say that I come pretty expensive as a cleaning boy. That being said, I am happy to perform that work for you if you so desire. Some have asked about how they can go about cleaning their own instrument. Here I will try to offer a few tips. If the piano is an upright, usually the lid can open towards the back of the piano allowing access to some of the parts inside. There is usually also a catch or screws to keep the music desk in place. Once that is off you should be able to vacuum to your heart’s content being careful around what could be fragile parts. The bottom board, or knee board as it is sometimes called, is often fastened to the piano with a spring at the top of this board. Push upwards on the spring and pull back on the top of the board or panel and it should remove easily. Here again, you can vacuum until your heart’s content. The last place that it is always good to vacuum on an upright is the back of the piano. To do this you will need to pull it away from the wall.

A grand piano can be trickier since most like to get the dust and dirt below the strings. This can be tough even for professionals. Toward this end I usually recommend (after a good vacuuming) that the use of a leaf blower, compressed air, or a reversed vacuum cleaner will allow what remains after a vacuuming to be blown out. It is important to note hear that I am a big fan of String covers once all the dust and dirt has been removed. These covers are wool felt only. They can be ordered through piano supply houses and should be in 60″ widths so that there are no seams necessary.

Music as a Language

A natural part of many conversations that I have with clients, especially those with young children, is whether I know any good teachers. I prefer not to answer his question directly since it seems to put my stamp of approval on someone when I don’t really know anything of their teaching techniques, only whether they teach or not.
